Guiding Good Choices is a Good Choice for Parents

Guiding Good Choices is a nationally recognized prevention program that helps parents keep their children alcohol and drug-free. It is geared to parents of students in grades 4 through 8, but the program teaches life skills that aid in alcohol and drug prevention for children at any age.

Guiding Good Choices is a three-session program that will help parents to strengthen family bonds, determine and set clear family positions on drugs and alcohol, teach children skills they will need to make healthy choices and increase children's involvement in the family.

All sessions will be held in the Thoreau Middle School library, 2505 Cedar Lane, Vienna, from 6 to 8 p.m. on three consecutive Tuesdays, March 16, 23 and 30. Parents are expected to attend all three sessions. Child care for children ages 3 and up, refreshments and workbooks will be provided at no cost.

Guiding Good Choices is sponsored by the Fairfax County Department of Systems Management for Human Services in partnership with the Vienna-Madison Community Coalition, the Fairfax County Public Schools’ Safe and Drug Free Youth Section, and the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board. The program is funded by a Virginia State Incentive Grant.

Further information about the program and registration forms will be sent home with students of Thoreau Middle School and its feeder elementary schools. Additional forms will be available in the schools and from Elizabeth Major at the Fairfax County Department of Systems Management for Human Services.
