Several County Agencies Offer Tax Assistance to Residents
With the approaching tax season, several Fairfax County Government agencies will offer assistance to county residents with their state and federal tax filing. The Department of Family Services, the Fairfax County Public Library and the Department of Tax Administration all offer various services.
Virginia residents can pick up state and federal income tax forms from the Fairfax County Public Library. Forms are available free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last. Tax forms are also available online at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/library/internet/taxforms.htm.
Tax preparation assistance is also available at several Fairfax County Public Library branches until April 15. Organizations providing tax preparation assistance include the American Association of Retired Persons and members of the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. A list of dates and times assistance is available is online at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/library/homepage.htm.
The Fairfax County Department of Tax Administration offers general assistance in completing Virginia state income taxes. If you need assistance, call DTA for an appointment at 703-222-8234, TTY 703-222-7594 or visit the DTA offices located in the Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Thursdays until 6:30 p.m.
This year, the Department of Family Services is offering clients in the Virginia Initiative for Employment not Welfare program free income tax preparation assistance in partnership with the Internal Revenue Service's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. Since Feb. 28, county employees from the Department of Family Services Self-Sufficiency Division and the Department of Finance have been volunteering their time two days a week to help VIEW clients fill out their tax forms. Starting next Wednesday, March 24, the tax preparation assistance offered by the Department of Family Services will be extended to other job seekers and members of the general public who meet the IRS criteria for using the VITA program.
Tax preparation assistance is offered by appointment at the Falls Church SkillSource Center on Wednesdays from 4 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Falls Church SkillSource Center is located at 6245 Leesburg Pike, Suite 315, Falls Church. The deadline to file Virginia income tax is May 1. Tax forms must be filed with the Virginia Department of Taxation, P.O. Box 760, Richmond, VA 23218-0760. For information on filing requirements, or to download tax forms, visit the Virginia Department of Taxation’s Web site at www.tax.state.va.us. The number to call for customer service is 804-367-8031, TTY 711, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

season, live assistance is available from IRS personnel from 7 a.m. to 10
p.m. weekdays and on Saturdays through April 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
