Northern Virginia Region Celebrates International Building Safety Week

International Building Safety Week will be celebrated April 4 - 10 to help the public understand how the building code and code enforcement professionals protect lives and property. In Fairfax County and neighboring jurisdictions, a variety of special events and activities are planned to commemorate the week.

To kick-off the week, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will declare April 4 - 10 as International Building Safety Week 2004 during its regularly scheduled Board of Supervisors meeting on March 29. Fairfax County has an excellent building safety record and is recognized as a national leader in the code enforcement profession. Similar proclamations are expected to be made in Prince William County, Arlington County, the city of Alexandria and the city of Fairfax during their regularly scheduled meetings.

During this meeting of the Board of Supervisors, the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services will also present the Building Safety Community Partnership Award, an award to recognize private or corporate residents for advancing the mission of ensuring building safety in Fairfax County. The seventh annual award will be presented to Washington Gas for the support provided during an earth slide in the Landsdowne community in the Mount Vernon district in 2003. The immediate response from Washington Gas, and their professional handling of the emergency, prevented a potentially disastrous gas line break. As a result of their actions, natural gas service was maintained in 16 of the 26 affected homes while interim repairs were made to the endangered retaining wall. Washington Gas employees also worked quickly to restore service to the remaining 10 homes as soon as it was safe to do so.

As part of International Building Safety Week, field inspectors, plan reviewers and administrative staff will be available at building supply stores on Saturday, April 3 and Sunday, April 4 to answer questions about building code and safety related issues. In a regional collaborative effort, the information booths will be staffed jointly by engineers and inspectors from Fairfax County, Arlington County, Prince William County, the city of Fairfax and the city of Alexandria. Building equipment and safety appliances, such as carbon monoxide alarms, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers and radon test kits will be displayed. Brochures on building and elevator safety and permit process information will be available to all customers and visitors.

Staff from the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services will join other jurisdictions at store entrances in several building supply stores from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on April 3 and 4:

  • Fairfax: Home Depot stores at 12275 Price Club Plaza;
               Seven Corners Center at 6201 Arlington Blvd.;
               Fairfax Circle at 3201 Old Lee Highway
  • Manassas: Home Depot store at 8805 Liberia Ave.
  • Alexandria: Home Depot store at 400 S. Pickett St.;
                   Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse, 6750 Richmond Highway.

On Friday, April 2, beginning at 9:30 a.m., a free continental breakfast presentation and news conference on building safety will be held at the Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax. The presentation will be given by Allyn E. Kilsheimer, P.E., founder of KCE Structural Engineers, PC, which provided emergency engineering, post-collapse assistance and the design and reconstruction of the structurally damaged areas of the Pentagon following the Sept. 11, 2001, attack. The presentation will also be attended by building, fire and health officials from five jurisdictions and leaders from the community and local trade associations. Additional information may be obtained by calling the Fairfax County Commercial Inspections Division at 703-324-1910, TTY 711.

During the month of April, Fairfax County Government cable channel 16 will air public service announcements to reinforce the importance of building safety. The public service announcements were produced by the Virginia Building and Code Officials Association in conjunction with Fairfax County.
