Fairfax County Sponsors Hazardous Waste Clean Up Day for Small Businesses

Fairfax County is launching a program to help small businesses economically dispose of their hazardous waste. Businesses located within the county that produce less than 100 kilograms (220 pounds/ 27 gallons) of hazardous waste per calendar month are eligible to bring their waste to the I-66 Citizen's Disposal Facility, located at 4618 West Ox Road, Fairfax, on Wednesday, April 14; Wednesday, July 28 and Wednesday, Oct. 6 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Businesses must bring a copy of their county or state business license to prove that they are located within the county and must sign a waiver stating that they produce less than 100 kilograms of hazardous waste per month. Disposal charges will be estimated based on the amount and type of waste and include consolidation, packaging, manifest paperwork and shipping preparation.

Waste must be in lidded containers that are smaller than five gallons. Items that will be accepted include flammable liquids, flammable solids, oil base paint, latex paint, insecticides, pesticides, herbicides, corrosives, poisons, nickel-cadmium batteries, lithium batteries, mercury batteries, zinc air batteries, antifreeze, aerosols, oxidizers, mercury, asbestos, coal tars, inks and photo chemicals. The county cannot accept compressed gas cylinders, explosives, ammunition, radioactive materials and medical or biological wastes.

It is often difficult and expensive for businesses to dispose of small quantities of hazardous waste because they do not meet the minimum thresholds required for on-site pickup. The clean up day provides an economical way for small businesses that do not meet these minimum thresholds to dispose of hazardous waste. Businesses that might benefit from this program include print shops, auto repair shops, household painting businesses, building contractors, manufacturing firms, landscape contractors and nurseries, property management companies, funeral homes and exterminators.

If you have questions about the clean up day or need further information or directions, contact Cliff Taylor, Fairfax County Solid Waste Management Program, at 703-803-9614, TTY 711.
