Fairfax County Earth Day/Arbor Day
Celebrates Care for the Environment
To celebrate Fairfax County Earth Day/Arbor Day, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and area businesses and community groups are sponsoring a day of activities on the Annandale Campus of Northern Virginia Community College, 8333 Little River Turnpike, Annandale, on Saturday, April 24, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This free event marks the 33rd anniversary of the Earth Day celebration and the annual observance of Arbor Day.
The April 24 program includes performances by Billy B, a nationally known environmental entertainer, Barnett Williams on the drums and a play by Glee Mania. Those attending can visit the petting zoo and Reptiles and Amphibians in Our Back Yard, see a program on the Living Rain Forest and view a presentation by the Wildlife Center of Virginia. Other activities include demonstrations and exhibits, free tree seedling giveaways, food, games, free Segway rides, a recycled costume parade and much more.
The Fairfax County Division of Solid Waste Collection and Recycling will also be on hand with the e-waste collection program at the Earth Day/Arbor Day Celebration. This collection program, made possible through a partnership with Computer Donations Management and Service Source, enables the county to collect old computers and electronics for recycling. There is a $10 charge for computer monitor disposal. The cost of the computer and the $10 disposal charge are tax-deductible. Also during the event, Michael McMahon, chairperson of the Fairfax County Tree Commission, will present the commission’s 2003 Friends of Trees Awards. The award winners are:
