National County Government Week Celebrations Scheduled in Fairfax County
Did you know April 18 - 24 is National County Government Week? This annual celebration of the contributions county government makes to our everyday lives is sponsored by the National Association of Counties. First held in 1990, the goal of county government week is to raise public awareness and understanding about the roles and responsibilities of the nation’s counties.
The theme this year is “Transportation: We Move America’s People and Products,” a timely subject and always an issue of great concern in a region with the third worst traffic congestion in the country according to an annual survey by the Texas Transportation Institute. In honor of this week, Fairfax County is celebrating the many ways county government improves our lives.
In honor of National County Government Week, Fairfax Connector is sponsoring “The Best of the Connector” contest giving Fairfax Connector riders the opportunity to nominate their favorite bus drivers for their good service. The Best of the Connector will be announced during the week of April 18 - 24.
Throughout the week at the South County Center, 8350 Richmond Highway,
Alexandria, people who visit the Human Services Department will be
welcomed with the message “Because of the Customer, We Exist.” At the
lobby desk of the Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway,
Fairfax, a similar effort will be underway. County agencies will be
giving away candy to show their thanks to the customers.
Thursday, April 22, agencies throughout the county will reach out to
children of employees to introduce them to the various careers in county
government. At the fourth annual Bring Your Children to Work Day, from 9
a.m. to noon, there will be interactive displays in the Government
Center. The Department of Fire and Rescue and the Police Department will
bring vehicles and demonstrations of their apparatus. In keeping with the
week’s transportation theme, Vehicle Services, Risk Management and
Transportation will each have displays encouraging vehicle safety.
