Public Hearing on Future of Solid Waste
On Monday, May 10, at 4:30 p.m., Fairfax County will hold a public hearing on the county's draft Solid Waste Management Plan. The hearing will be part of the regular Board of Supervisors meeting in the Board Auditorium at the Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax. Those wishing to speak at the hearing are encouraged to get on the speakers' list by calling the Clerk to the Board of Supervisors at 703-324-3151, TTY 703-324-3903, or visiting www.fairfaxcounty.gov/gov/bos/speaker_bos.htm.
The plan provides an integrated management system and long-range planning for waste and recycling for the next 20 years. The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality requires jurisdictions in Virginia to submit new solid waste management plans by July 1, 2004. Solid waste includes almost everything we throw away or recycle, including yard waste, brush, household trash, recyclables, commercial trash, industrial waste and construction debris. An integrated management system controls everything that happens to solid waste: collection, transfer, recycling and disposal. The following are some of the recommendations contained in the plan:
- Increase curbside recycling materials by adding plastic bottles, cardboard and mixed paper
- Expand public outreach and education about the solid waste management program
- Increase business recycling by asking all businesses to recycle
- Increase county oversight of residential waste collection to improve efficiency and effectiveness
- Continue to use the Energy/Resource Recovery Facility by negotiating a new agreement by 2011
Additional information about the plan is available at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dpwes/swmp/default.htm.
