Fairfax County's James Gorby is Topflight Fleet Manager
Fairfax County Director of the Department of Vehicle Services James D. Gorby has been selected by the American Public Works Association to receive the Professional Manager of the Year in Public Fleet Award for 2004. Accomplishments and initiatives leading to Gorby’s selection by the association include:
• A long-range strategic plan that calls for excellent maintenance of the fleet at the best possible price
• Development of a fleet through diesel retrofits, hybrid-electric vehicles and the use of ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel
• Applying for and receiving a $1 million grant from the U. S. Department of Energy to retrofit the Fairfax County Public School buses with diesel-oxidation kits
• Instituting an intern program in partnership with Fairfax County Public Schools high school academies to train 12 students a year in the county’s maintenance facilities
• Reducing the department’s staff by more than 125 while the fleet grew from 4,000 to 5,700, resulting in a savings of $5 million
• Increasing customer-service ratings each year with the past year reaching the 90 percent level for “excellent” customer service
