South County Bus Plan Approved
Implementation Scheduled for Fall 2004
At their regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, June 21, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved the South County Bus Plan, which will increase bus service in the Richmond Highway corridor and the greater Springfield, Lorton and Kingstowne areas by 25 percent.
FAIRFAX CONNECTOR bus routes, Metrobus 9A and TAGS bus service in south Fairfax County have been redesigned to operate longer hours, make more frequent trips, provide two-way loops and more reverse-commute options, and provide better connections to other routes and transportation modes. Special features of the plan include a limited-stop express bus along Richmond Highway and an express bus operating to the Pentagon from the Franconia-Springfield Metrorail Station.
The South County bus service changes are expected to be implemented on Sept. 26, 2004. Passengers will be provided with new bus schedules, route maps and comprehensive information about the changes in early September, several weeks prior to start-up. The Fairfax County Department of Transportation conducted four public meetings and three open houses in February and March to solicit public comments on the South County Bus Plan. Comments also were taken by mail, by e-mail and by telephone. Numerous revisions have been made to the original South County Bus Service proposal, based on citizen and passenger input. The South County Bus Plan approved yesterday by the Fairfax County Board incorporates those revisions.
