2004 Exceptional Design Awards Winners

The design jury for the 20th annual Fairfax County Exceptional Design Awards Program recently selected four entries to receive awards for exceptional architectural and site design. The design awards program is sponsored by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and administered by the Department of Planning and Zoning in cooperation with the Architectural Review Board and the Northern Virginia Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The purpose of the awards program is to recognize achievement in the total design of a building and site and to create an awareness of outstanding planning and design projects among design professionals and the general public. The awards will be presented at a Board of Supervisors meeting in the fall. This year's awards recipients are:

Honor Award:
National Air and Space Museum, Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center (Institutional)
Architect: Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum, P.C., Washington, D.C.
Owner/Developer: The Smithsonian Institution
Year Built: 2003

Merit Award:
Trillium House (Residential, Single-family Detached)
Architect: Jon Hensley Architects, PLLC, Arlington, Va.
Owner/Developer: Names withheld
Year Built: 2002

Merit Award:
MITRE Corporation - Pedestrian Bridge (Commercial, Office)
Architect: Ai, Washington, D.C.
Owner/Developer: The MITRE Corporation
Year Built: 2003

Honorable Mention Award:
Unity of Fairfax (Institutional)
Architect: LeMay Erickson Architects
Owner/Developer: Unity of Fairfax
Year Built: 2002

Names were removed from project nominations and judged by a review committee comprised of representatives of the Northern Virginia Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (Randall Mars and Elisabeth Reader), the Potomac Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (Oliver Boehm), the Virginia Chapter of the American Planning Association (Hillary Katherine Zahm), the Engineers and Surveyors Institute (Denis Gulakowski), the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce (J. Paul Lewis), the Fairfax County History Commission (Robert E. Beach), and the Fairfax County Architectural Review Board (Joy Marshall Ortiz).
