A Guide to Environmental Excellence

How do we improve air and water quality in Fairfax County? How do we accommodate population growth? Already a leader on environmental issues, both regionally and nationally, Fairfax County now has a 20-year plan that gives guidance on these questions and more.

At its regular meeting on Monday, June 21, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors endorsed and adopted the Environmental Excellence 20-year Vision Plan, originally drafted by Chairman Gerald E. Connolly and a group of about two dozen Fairfax County environmentalists. Supervisor Penelope A. Gross, chair of the Board's Environment Committee, says the plan will provide more guidance to Board members, county staff and the community when making decisions that have environmental impacts.

"I'm very gratified that for the first time, Fairfax County has a comprehensive environmental vision," said Connolly, author of the plan. "We've always been a leader on this issue, and with the adoption of this plan, we will continue to be."

The plan is organized into six areas: growth and land use; air quality and transportation; water quality; solid waste; parks, trails and open space; and environmental stewardship. The plan centers on two principles: conservation of the limited natural resources must be interwoven into all government decisions; and the county must be committed to provide the necessary resources to protect the environment.

"None of the recommendations in the vision plan will happen overnight," said Gross. "But if these important steps are taken now, the county's children will be able to look back and see that the Fairfax County of 2024 was the beneficiary of some very important Board actions taken in 2004."
