Hunter Mill Supervisor Given Humanitarian of the Year Award
Fairfax County Supervisor Catherine M. Hudgins (Hunter Mill District) recently received the Humanitarian of the Year Award at the Annual Educational Leadership Awards ceremony. The award was presented by The Arc of Northern Virginia and the event was hosted by Riggs Bank.
“It was a total surprise,” Hudgins said. “My office was aware but kept
it from me, just making
sure I got
to the event on time. The Arc is an essential part of our community.
Their advocacy brings a strong voice to the disability community.
Receiving the award from an organization which is highly regarded and
respected at the local and state levels is an honor and a pleasure.”
Five community leaders received Arc Special Recognition Awards for their dedication and outstanding contributions made within the community to help ensure quality services for those with developmental disabilities and their families. The Education Leadership Awards event also recognized 14 teachers from Arlington and Fairfax Counties who also received awards for maximizing the achievement of students with disabilities in academics, employment, independent living and community participation.
The Arc of Northern Virginia’s mission is to secure and sustain the full range of rights, opportunities and choices for a satisfying and productive life with dignity for all people with cognitive, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and their families. It is an affiliate of the national organization, The Arc, which was founded in May 1962.
