Groundbreaking Marks the Start of the Courthouse Expansion and Renovation

The expansion and renovation of the Fairfax County Courthouse is now officially underway. At a groundbreaking ceremony earlier this morning, officials spoke about the future and the significance of having all three courts (Circuit, General District, and Juvenile and Domestic Relations) under one roof once the project is complete. To see the program for the ceremony, which includes a history of the courthouse, visit www.fairfaxcounty.gov/courts/groundbreaking.pdf.

The $94.5 million courthouse expansion construction project will add 316,000 square feet to the Jennings Judicial Center and partially renovate the existing building to include necessary security enhancements. The addition, including 14 courtrooms, will be used by all three court groups, the bulk going to the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. The addition will also include space for a public law library and a shared office area for various county staff not permanently located at the courthouse, such as probation officers. The construction of the expansion is scheduled to be completed in 2007 and the entire project completed by March 2008. After 204 years of active courtroom service, the old courthouse is going to become an administration building, primarily for court related agencies.
