Plan to Watch TV to Learn About Planning
Every Thursday at 6:30 p.m., Fairfax County Government Cable Channel 16 broadcasts "The Planning Commission Roundtable," a 30-minute program for citizens, land owners, civic associations and developers who wish to gain a better understanding of the Fairfax County Planning Commission's role in land use planning and development in the county. The program is moderated by the Commission Chairman Peter F. Murphy, Springfield District, and discussion topics and guests change on a monthly basis. Viewers can also submit questions of general interest on the land use process by mail or e-mail to be addressed in future programs.
For the month of August, the program featured is the Geographic Information System. Imagine being able to go to an Internet site, type in a county property address and get a list of zoning hearings pending within a certain area of that address; or being able to view a color-coded map of the county showing the planning districts, voting districts, locations of police and fire stations, or school boundaries; or being able to download and print a map of any parcel in the county. These are just a few of the services available through the county's Geographic Information System. Join Planning Commission Chairman Pete Murphy and At-Large Planning Commissioner Walter Alcorn as they explore, with Mike Liddle, GIS manager, and Tom Conry, GIS and Mapping Branch manager, the many practical uses of GIS, as well as additional uses planned for the future.
Also during August (and part of September), Channel 16 will be rebroadcasting previous "Planning Commission Roundtable" programs as well. All of the following shows will begin at 8 p.m.:
Wednesday, Aug. 18: Tree Preservation
Thursday, Aug. 19: Planning Commission Web site
Wednesday, Aug. 25: Planning Commission 65th Anniversary
Thursday, Aug. 26: Laurel Hill Redevelopment
Wednesday, Sept. 1: U.S. Army Museum
Thursday, Sept. 2: Outdoor Lighting
