Fairfax County Sponsors Low Cost Backyard Composter Truckload
Sale
On Saturday, Sept. 18, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. the Fairfax County
Recycling Program will host a backyard composter truckload sale in the
Giant Food parking lot at 359 Maple Avenue E., Vienna and at the Home
Depot parking lot at 1651 Reston Parkway, Reston. The Earth Machines™
composters will sell for only $35 plus tax, a significant savings from
the regular $80 retail price.
Homeowners can use the Earth Machine™ to compost fruit and vegetable
scraps, crushed eggshells, tea bags, coffee grounds and filters from the
kitchen. With the addition of layers of mulched leaves, dried grass,
garden plants, old potting soil and soft plant stems from the garden and
with a little maintenance and care, the materials are broken down
naturally into compost, which homeowners can use to enrich the soil in
their gardens. According to Environmental Protection Agency studies,
residents can divert approximately 650 pounds of waste per year. This
composted material can be used to add nutrients and organic materials to
lawns and gardens.
“We are pleased to be able to offer another opportunity for residents to
purchase compost bins. Our sale in May was very successful,” says Pamela
Gratton, manager of the Fairfax County Recycling Program, part of the
Division of Solid Waste within the Department of Public Works and
Environmental Services.
The backyard compost bin sale will take place rain or shine, and cash
and check sales will be made on site. For more information, contact the
Fairfax County Recycling Program at 703-803-3322, TTY 711.
