South County Neighborhood College Now Taking Applications
Beginning Thursday, Sept. 23, the Department of Systems Management for Human Services, Region One, the Lorton Library and the South County Federation are sponsoring the “South County and Lorton Neighborhood College.” At the neighborhood college, interested residents will learn how to collaborate with others who live or work in Southern Fairfax County to strengthen their neighborhoods and build a strong sense of community.
Through a combination of panel presentations, hands-on activities, group discussions and fieldwork, the Neighborhood College will provide an opportunity to learn more about local communities and the local county government. The Neighborhood College is free, but applicants must be willing to commit to attending the eight sessions during the seven-week period. Light meals will be provided. Classes run from 6:30 to 9 p.m. (on Thursdays) and are held in the Lorton Library, 9520 Richmond Highway, Lorton. One Saturday session will be held at the South County Center, 8350 Richmond Highway, Alexandria, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Classes are scheduled through Nov. 4.
