OAR Volunteer Training Changes Lives
Opportunities, Alternatives & Resources of Fairfax County Inc., a local non-profit rehabilitative justice organization providing human services since 1971, will hold volunteer orientation training two consecutive Saturdays, Sept. 18 and Sept. 25, at Fairfax Presbyterian Church, 10723 Main St., Fairfax. OAR’s mission is to rebuild lives and break the cycle of crime by providing opportunities, alternatives, and resources to criminal offenders and their families. Volunteer opportunities include one-to-one mentoring with offenders, teaching life skills, assisting Hispanic offenders, outreach for family and friends, and English as a Second Language facilitation. Volunteers for certain programs must be 21 or older.
An initial training program is designed to educate volunteers to become fully functioning members of the OAR team. After a personal interview with the volunteer department, volunteers must attend 12 hours of intensive orientation that includes detailed information about:
• Dealing with Offenders
• Communication Skills
• Conflict Management
• Probation and Parole
• Substance Abuse
• Court Procedures
