County Flag Is Flying at Half Staff to Honor Former Vice Chairman Martha Pennino
The county’s flag is flying at half staff in memory of former county Vice Chairman Martha Virginia Pennino, who passed away on Friday. The flag will remain at half staff at all county buildings until sunset tonight.
“I feel a great sense of personal loss,” said Fairfax County Chairman Gerald E. Connolly. “Martha Pennino personally inspired me to run for public office — and she inspired others through her example. For Martha, the mission was always about people, not politics. Mother Fairfax nurtured this community into what it is today, and we must carry forward her love and care for Fairfax County.”
A public funeral service will be held today at 7 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church, 711 Spring Street SE, Vienna. Chairman Connolly will be in attendance, along with other members of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Robert F. Horan Jr. will deliver the eulogy, and the Rev. Sandi Johns of the Washington Plaza Baptist Church will lead the service.
Following the service, family, friends and members of the public are invited to attend a celebration of Pennino’s life. The celebration will take place in the fellowship hall at Wesley Methodist.
The Pennino family has stated that donations can be made to the George Mason University Foundation Inc. in Pennino’s memory. Please call the foundation at 703-993-8850 for more information about how to make a contribution.
Pennino will be interred at Arlington National
Cemetery with her husband, Walter A. Pennino Sr., a former lieutenant
colonel in the U.S. Army.
