2004 Day Laborer Report is Available Online
The Fairfax County Department of Systems Management for Human Services’ report, “Day Labor Survey: An Account of Day Laborers in Fairfax County” is now available on the county’s Web site. The report is a point-in-time study that contains information about the county’s day labor population, including demographic and employment characteristics.
The information in the 2004 publication reflects data gathered by the 2003 Day Labor Survey, which was conducted at four sites in Fairfax County where day laborers gather to wait for work: Annandale (Hummer Road), Culmore, Herndon and Springfield. Sites were identified by the Fairfax County Police Department and staff from the Department of Systems Management for Human Services.
The Day Labor Report can be accessed electronically on the county’s Web site at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/service/dsm. The entire report may be downloaded as a PDF file free of charge.
Day laborers include workers that gather at street corners, parking lots, strip malls, community centers or official hiring sites seeking daily or hourly employment from numerous employers.
Among the report’s findings, day laborers in Fairfax County tend to be younger men. Almost two-thirds (65.6 percent) of respondents were between 18 and 35 years of age with an average age of 32.9 years. Most day laborers report earnings above the minimum wage – 6.1 percent of respondents reported making less than $6.99 per hour, almost two-thirds reported earnings of $7 to $9.99 per hour, and 27.8 percent reported making $10 to $14.99 per hour.
