Braddock District Supervisor Hosts Emergency Preparedness Clinic
Braddock District Supervisor Sharon Bulova will host an emergency preparedness clinic on Tuesday, Oct. 19, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the main meeting room of the Kings Park Library, 9000 Burke Lake Road, Burke. Representatives from the American Red Cross of the National Capital Area, Fairfax County’s Citizen Corps Council, the Office of Emergency Management, and the Police and Fire & Rescue departments will provide information and brochures. Fairfax County Director of the Office of Emergency Management C. Douglas Bass, Fire & Rescue’s coordinator for the Community Emergency Response Teams Robert Mizer and others from Fairfax County’s Citizen Corps Council will speak at the event.
“We’re always encouraging county residents to be prepared, but on Oct. 19, we will tell them how to be prepared…meaning what they should put in their emergency supplies kit and how to prepare personal, family and neighborhood communication plans,” said Supervisor Bulova. County and Red Cross officials will show you how to:
• Make a kit to help you through the first 72 hours of a local or
regional emergency.
• Prepare a list of what you need to have on hand for any kind of
disaster.
• Prepare a communication plan for you, your family, and
community.
• Take advantage of available resources and learn about different types
of emergencies.
• Give blood and volunteer for disaster response programs.
Representatives from Fairfax County’s Citizen Corps Council will provide information on how to volunteer for emergency preparedness programs and enroll in training courses. These programs include:
• Neighborhood Watch – 600 communities in Fairfax County have Watch programs. Learn how to start one in your community.
• Community Emergency Response Team – be part of a CERT in your community. Fairfax County’s Fire & Rescue Department’s 31-hour CERT course includes instruction in light fire suppression, disaster training, first aid, and more.
• Volunteers In Police Service –volunteer at a local police station so officers can be in the community.
• Medical Reserve Corps (primarily for those in the medical and health professions) – be ready to move into action should the county need to mass-inoculate residents. Fairfax County’s Health Department provides training classes.
