Board to Recognize Vienna's Celebration
of the Virginia National Holiday Tree
A beautiful 70-foot red spruce located in Virginia's Highland County on the Warm Springs Ranger District of the George Washington National Forest was selected as the 2004 National Capitol Holiday Tree. This is the first time Virginia has provided the holiday tree that will decorate the U.S. Capitol lawn. The theme for this year's Holiday Tree is "From Virginia - Birthplace of Presidents." The holiday tree will travel through 33 Virginia localities with a final stop in the town of Vienna where officials have planned a special celebration. In recognition of this honor and celebration, the Board of Supervisors will invite town representatives to receive a certificate at the regular meeting of the Board of Supervisors on Monday, Nov. 15, beginning at 9 a.m.
In November, the tree will travel to events in communities throughout Virginia before being transported to Washington, D.C. The town of Vienna is the last stop en route to the Capitol. A truck carrying the tree will arrive around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 28, and park in front of the Freeman House on Church Street, N.E., Vienna. The town will celebrate with a "Capitol Holiday Tree Festival" from 6 to 8 p.m. to give residents a chance to see the giant spruce up close and enjoy holiday music and revelry. In December, the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives will throw a switch, lighting the tree on the front lawn of Capitol building.
Citizens are encouraged to design ornaments for the Holiday Tree and 60 - 80 smaller "companion trees." The companion trees will adorn U.S. House, Senate and other government office buildings. The ornaments will showcase Virginia's history, natural resources, agricultural products, cultural diversity and heritage. Design criteria, sample ornaments and entry forms are available at www.capitolholidaytree2004.org.
