Media Advisory: Odor Control Master Plan for Noman Cole
Pollution Control Plant to be Discussed
Odor control is the topic of a public meeting on Monday, Oct. 18, at the Noman M. Cole Jr. Pollution Control Plant. Neighborhood residents are invited to participate in the development of a master plan to further reduce background odors from the sewage treatment facility.
The 7 p.m. meeting will take place at the plant, which is located at 9399 Richmond Highway , Lorton. Representatives from the plant and CH2M Hill, a consulting firm hired by Fairfax County , will be present.
At the meeting, a dozen residents will be asked to serve on an advisory group to guide the direction and focus of the proposed 10-year master plan. This panel will meet three to four times over a six month period.
The plant currently spends more than $1 million a year on odor control operations, as a result of its decade-long strategy to reduce nuisance smells. Plant managers, however, wish to curtail the more subtle odors that still remain. The master plan will identify capital and operational improvements to contain and control these odors.
Fairfax County has hired engineering firm CH2M Hill to draft the master plan. During this summer’s hottest months, CH2M Hill took 30 odor samples from various locations around the plant, and these samples will be used to recommend proposed solutions.
The Noman M. Cole Jr. Pollution Control Plant was placed in service in 1970. Today, it serves close to half of Fairfax County residents, treating more than 40 million gallons of wastewater daily. The neighborhoods of Gunston Plaza , Lorton Station, Williamsburg Square are adjacent to the plant.
