Beauty is Only Bin Deep

There will be no swimsuit competition in this beauty contest, but Fairfax County is joining with local jurisdictions throughout the Washington, D.C. area to search for the most beautifully prepared recycling bin. Residents are encouraged to participate in the contest by sending photographs, preferably in digital format, of their properly prepared recycling bins to ed.harris@fairfaxcounty.gov or by mail to Ed Harris, Division of Solid Waste Collection and Recycling, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Suite 466, Fairfax, VA 22035 by Friday, Nov. 5. Name, address and telephone number must be included when submitting a photograph. The owner of the winning bin will receive a recycled products gift basket at the Community Recycling Road Show on Saturday, Nov. 13.

Bins will be judged on cleanliness and content. Bins that include trash or non-recyclable materials will be disqualified from the competition. Recyclable materials in Fairfax County include glass bottles and jars, cans, plastic bottles and jugs, paper, cardboard and yard debris. Residents who have their trash service provided by a private hauler are encouraged to contact their hauler for exact recycling guidelines. Fairfax County residents can find out if they have county service by calling 703-802-3322, TTY 711.

The beautiful bin contest is part of Fairfax County’s celebration of America Recycles Day, a national program to encourage Americans to improve their recycling habits and to buy recycled products. Other activities planned for America Recycles Day in Fairfax County include a national pledge card drive for county residents to pledge to recycle more. Residents can participate in the pledge card drive by visiting the America Recycles Day Web site at www.americarecyclesday.org. National pledge card prizes include a new car, bicycles and spa vacations.

The Community Recycling Road Show, sponsored by Fairfax County and the Herndon High School Students Against Global Abuse, will be held on Saturday, Nov. 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Herndon High School, 700 Bennett Street, Herndon. Items to be collected as part of the road show include obsolete computers, used bicycles, cell phones and eyeglasses. All materials collected for recycling also benefit local community organizations. ServiceSource, a nonprofit organization that provides jobs for people with disabilities, will be collecting the computers. The bicycles are being collected for shipment overseas by Pedals for Progress. The cell phones are collected by Fairfax Opportunities, Alternatives and Resources to be given to domestic assault victims. Fairfax OAR receives a small stipend from each phone collected that supports their programs to assist prisoners and their families. The eyeglasses are collected by the Reston Lion’s Club who sorts them and then sends them to overseas medical clinics.
