Fairfax County Earns Recognition by EPA and USDOT's Best Workplaces for CommutersSM Program
Fairfax County is one of only 20 county governments nationwide to be recognized with the designation as one of the Best Workplaces for CommutersSM. Established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), this public-private sector voluntary program advocates for employee commuter benefits. The program also showcases the efforts of many top employers to help employees overcome or eliminate various commute-related hurdles so that employees can arrive at work safely, on time, and ready to work. Providing commuter benefits helps employers address a multitude of issues associated with the vast volume of cars on the road. Some of the issues addressed by these programs include limited or expensive parking, traffic congestion, employee recruitment and retention, and environmental impacts associated with drive-alone commuting.
Fairfax County uses many tools that the program recognizes as environmentally and employee-friendly. The county provides its employees with commuter benefits such as Metrochek, ridesharing and carpool matching, vanpool incentives, parking at park-and-ride lots, teleworking, providing reserved parking spaces for carpoolers and vanpools, and providing secure bicycle parking.
In addition, Fairfax County's Department of Transportation received recognition for the Employer Services Program. The program is designed to help local businesses and employees find transportation solutions that translate into business success, thereby improving the economic vitality and the quality of life for the entire region. In this program, an employer services specialist works on-site with employers to help them realize the bottom-line benefits of commute alternatives. The Employer Services Program provides various benefits to participants in this program including:
- Surveying employees to determine transit needs and preferences
- Helping with carpool and vanpool formations
- Providing up-to-date information on local bus schedules
- Helping implement Metrochek programs
- Implementing formal telework programs
