Board to Present Inaugural Barbara Varon Volunteer Award
On Nov. 15, 2004, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will present the inaugural Barbara Varon Volunteer Award at its regular meeting. The award was established to recognize a Fairfax County resident’s dedication to improving the community through volunteer service and to honor the memory of Barbara Varon, former chairman of the Fairfax County Electoral Board.
A selection panel appointed by the Board of Supervisors chose an award recipient from among 10 exceptional nominees. After careful consideration, Toa Do of Fairfax County was chosen by the selection panel as the first recipient of the Barbara Varon Volunteer Award.
Do has served on numerous boards and commissions to empower new American communities and minorities in Fairfax County. Since 1991, Do has encouraged new Americans to perform their civic duty and participate in the political process. Do has been a volunteer for many organizations, including the Fairfax County Public Schools, Police Department, Park Authority, the Fairfax County Reappportionment Committee after the 2000 census and the State Advisory Committee for the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.
“His lengthy history of volunteerism to the Fairfax County community and its residents clearly qualifies Do for this award,” said Office of Equity Programs Director William Spencer.
The award’s selection criteria states that nominees must reside in Fairfax County; demonstrate an appreciation for the diversity of our community’s population; exhibit patriotism; show evidence of having a positive effect on the community; and be known for encouraging others to do the same.
Beginning this year, the award will be given
annually. For more information regarding the Barbara Varon Volunteer
Award, please contact William A. Spencer, director, Office of Equity
