Recycling Road Show Helps the Environment and More
Fairfax County and the Herndon High School Students Against Global Abuse will sponsor their annual community recycling road show on Saturday, Nov. 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Herndon High School, 700 Bennett Street, Herndon. Items to be collected as part of the road show include obsolete computers, used bicycles, cell phones and eyeglasses.
All material collected for recycling will benefit local community organizations. ServiceSource, a nonprofit organization that provides jobs for people with disabilities, will be collecting the computers. There is a $10 processing fee for CRT monitors. All other equipment is processed free of charge. Bicycles are being collected for shipment overseas by Pedals for Progress. Pedals for Progress suggests a $10 donation to help defray bicycle shipping costs. The cell phones are collected by Fairfax Opportunities, Alternatives and Resources to be given to domestic assault victims. Fairfax OAR receives a small stipend from each phone collected that supports their programs to assist prisoners and their families. The eyeglasses are collected by members of the Reston Lion's Club who sort them and then send them to overseas medical clinics. All donations are tax deductible.
Residents will also be able to shred personal documents (up to 100 lbs. per person) at a shredder provided by Safeguard Shred Inc. The shredded paper will be recycled.
At 1:30 p.m. the county will hold a brief ceremony to recognize county recycling program volunteers.
