2005 Annual Mount Vernon District Town Meeting

Mount Vernon Supervisor Gerry Hyland will be hosting Mount Vernon 's 18th Annual Town Meeting that will take place Saturday, Feb. 5, at 9 a.m. at Mount Vernon High School 's Little Theatre, 8515 Old Mount Vernon Road, Alexandria.

Supervisor Hyland will take his constituents on a virtual bus ride of Richmond Highway and areas nearby that are experiencing new development. The tour will begin at Westgrove Park and end at Mount Vernon Hospital.

The town meeting panelists will include Board of Supervisors Chairman Gerald Connolly, County Executive Tony Griffin, Lee District Supervisor Dana Kauffman, Chief Financial Officer Ed Long, Fire Chief Mike Neuhard, Chief of Police David Rohrer and School Superintendent Jack Dale.

“Directed primarily to residents of the Mount Vernon Magisterial District including Lorton and Springfield, the meeting is open to all residents of the county, providing a local forum to hear the significant issues involving Mount Vernon as well as countywide affairs, while creating the opportunity for citizens to meet their elected representatives and express their views and concerns,” says Supervisor Hyland.

Although the presentations will not begin until 9 a.m., residents are welcome to walk through the cafeteria to look at the more than 50 displays and exhibits beginning at 7:45 a.m. while enjoying coffee and donuts. Exhibits will include information on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge and its interchanges to Richmond Highway and Telegraph Road, and the final connection of the Fairfax County Parkway. Residents will also be able to bring their rechargeable batteries for cell phones and PDAs for recycling as well as old cell phones and eyeglasses for donation.

Several county agencies will be present to answer citizens' questions including the Office of Public Affairs, Department of Family Services, Park Authority, Police, Fire and Rescue, Animal Control, Tax Administration and Storm Water Management. Some noncounty agencies will include the Southeast Fairfax Development Corporation, Gunston Hall, Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority and Volunteer Fairfax. Congressman Jim Moran, Congressman Tom Davis, State Senator Toddy Puller, State Delegate Kris Amundson and State Delegate Mark Sickles have confirmed that they will also be in attendance.
