Area Residents Have Opportunity to Build a Strong Community Through the South County Neighborhood College

The Fairfax County Department of Systems Management for Human Services will host the spring 2005 South County Neighborhood College beginning on March 1. Classes will be held on Tuesday evenings, March 1 through April 19, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. An additional Saturday session will be held on March 19, from 9 a.m. to noon. All classes will be held on the second floor conference center at the South County Center, 8350 Richmond Highway, Alexandria.

The theme of the Neighborhood College is “Building a Strong Community” and will provide the opportunity for residents to learn how to collaborate with others who live or work in southern Fairfax County to strengthen their neighborhood and build a strong sense of community. Through a combination of panel presentations, hands-on activities, group discussions and field work, the Neighborhood College will provide the opportunity to learn more about:

  • Fairfax County services and how to access them
  • The history and current demographics of the area
  • Community resources
  • Accessing and using information related to community interests/concerns
  • Cross-cultural dynamics
  • Building community partnerships
  • How to operate effectively as a local leader

Classes are free and light meals are provided, however, class size is limited. Interested residents should contact Maria Franco-Nativi at 703-704-6700, TTY 711, or by e-mail at Maria.Franco-Nativi@fairfaxcounty.gov to register.
