Braddock District Sponsors Fire Safety Briefing
Braddock District Supervisor Sharon Bulova has invited Fire Chief Michael Neuhard and his staff to provide a fire safety briefing for residents of the Braddock District. The briefing will be held Tuesday, March 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the Kings Park Library Community Meeting Room.
“The need to look at the issue of fire safety stemmed from the extraordinary run of 26 structural fires in Fairfax County in December 2004,” according to Supervisor Bulova. “Twenty-three of the fires were in personal residences and at least three of them occurred in the Braddock District.”
On Dec. 4, 2004, an electrical fire caused $150,000 in damage to a home on Virginia Avenue in Annandale. On Dec. 14, 2004, a chimney fire did $75,000 in damage to a house on Killebrew Drive in Annandale. That same day, $50,000 in damage was caused by another fireplace/chimney fire in a home on Andromeda Drive in Burke.
During the briefing on March 1, Chief Neuhard will provide an analysis of the December fires and will share fire prevention tips. Because the Fire and Rescue Department had several reports of occupants attempting to fight the fires before calling 9-1-1, Chief Neuhard will also talk about the correct actions to take in the event of a fire. Members of the department’s Fire Prevention Division will discuss how accidental fires start and what residents can do to prevent those fires.
A variety of fire safety information is also available on the county’s Web site at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/ps/fr/educate/educate.htm.
To register for the fire safety briefing, call Supervisor Bulova’s office at 703-425-9300, TTY 711.
