Fairfax County Searches for Local Leaders
for Business Recycling Awards

Is your company doing its part to help conserve energy and save natural resources by recycling paper, plastic, newspapers, bottles, cans and other materials? If so, you could be a winner of the fourth annual Business Recycling Awards.

Each year, the Fairfax County Solid Waste Management Program recognizes businesses, schools and nonprofit organizations that are implementing innovative programs in waste reduction, recycling and reuse. The county is now accepting nominations.

Any Fairfax County business, school or nonprofit organization is eligible to apply. Waste reduction, recycling and/or reuse efforts carried out between Jan. 1, 2004, and March 15, 2005, are eligible for consideration. Deadline for submission of application materials is March 30, 2005.

Awards will be given in the following categories:

  • Small businesses and nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations
  • Businesses with 51 or more employees
  • Elementary schools
  • Middle schools
  • High schools
  • Property managers

Applications will be judged based on the following criteria:

  • The total amount of trash diverted from waste stream through recycling, waste reduction and/or reuse efforts
  • Positive impact on and benefit to Fairfax County’s environment
  • Level of employee participation
  • Innovation and creativity of the program

All qualified entries will receive a certificate from Fairfax County. The winners will be awarded a commemorative plaque made of 100 percent recycled glass and will be honored at a special presentation at the Fairfax County Earth Day/Arbor Day Celebration held in April at the Northern Virginia Community College in Annandale.

Applications can be downloaded from the Web site at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dpwes/recycling/cm-awardintro.htm. Materials will not be returned. Late applications will not be considered.

Applications must be postmarked by March 30, 2005, and mailed to the Fairfax County Recycling Program, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Suite 466, Fairfax, VA 22035.
