Cub Scouts and Fifth Graders Know ‘It’s Cool to Recycle’

Den 3 of Cub Scout Pack 1152, Great Falls, and Mrs. Dori Hargrove’s fifth grade class of Flint Hill Elementary School, Vienna, have been named this year’s winners of the “It’s Cool to Recycle” contest. The contest, sponsored by the Fairfax County Recycling Program, was part of the Clean Your Files/Closets Week, held Jan. 24 - 28. Community and school groups created projects to find beneficial uses for items not needed. Winners received a Ben & Jerry’s gift certificate for ice cream.

The prize for community groups was awarded to Den 3 Cub Scout Pack 1152. The Scouts and their families collected 18 bags of items including toys, clothes and household goods for families temporarily residing at the Anchorage Motel in Fairfax. “Many of the families staying there are low income or homeless. They are often overlooked by charitable organizations due to their low visibility,” said Gayl Hann, Cub Scouts advisor for the project.

Mrs. Hagrove’s fifth grade class won the prize for school groups. Students collected more than 200 pounds of gently used school supplies for children impacted by the South East Asian tsunami. The class worked with the Sri Lankan Embassy and the Wheaton International Buddhist Center to send the supplies to students in Sri Lanka.

One student noted, “My class had fun collecting the school supplies and it made us feel really great to help the people of Sri Lanka!” Mrs. Hargrove added, “Everyone at Flint Hill Elementary deserves credit for their generosity and compassion for the victims of this disaster. I was pleased and touched by the outpouring of love demonstrated by the students at Flint Hill.”

This is the second year the Fairfax County Recycling Program, part of the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services, held the “It’s Cool to Recycle” contest.
