Tax Relief Workshop for Mount Vernon Seniors

Mount Vernon District Supervisor Gerry Hyland will host a workshop on Tuesday, March 29, from 10 a.m. to noon to assist Mount Vernon senior citizens applying for tax relief.

County tax officials will be available in the community room of the Mount Vernon Government Center, 2511 Parkers Lane, Alexandria. Seniors with financial documents in hand will receive assistance in completing required applications on a first-come, first-served basis.

Senior citizens and those with permanent disabilities who owned and occupied their residences in Fairfax County as of Dec. 31 of the preceding year may qualify for real estate tax relief from the county if they meet certain income and financial worth qualifications. The county offers rental grants to eligible seniors and those with disabilities. In addition, the county also provides relief from personal property tax and the county vehicle decal fee to eligible senior citizens and residents with disabilities.

Tax relief applications can be downloaded from the county’s Web site at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dta. An affidavit of disability, for those who need one, also can be found online.

Applications for all 2005 programs are due April 1. However, first-time filers and citizens filing late due to hardship have until Dec. 31 of the year following the year the application is due. Applicants filing late due to hardship must provide detailed substantiation that a hardship existed which prevented a timely filing.

The March 29 workshop is for those who would like assistance completing forms for tax relief on 2005 real estate and personal property taxes.
