Back by Popular Demand: Backyard Composter Truckload Sale
On Saturday, April 23, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Fairfax County Recycling Program will host a backyard composter truckload sale at the Village Center parking lot, 5600 Stone Road, Centreville, and the student parking lot of Northern Virginia Community College, Annandale Campus, 8333 Little River Turnpike, Annandale. The Annandale sale coincides with the county Earth Day/Arbor Day Celebration, which will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Earth Machines™ composters will sell for only $37 plus tax, a significant savings from the regular $80 retail price.
Homeowners can use the Earth Machine™ to compost fruit and vegetable scraps, crushed eggshells, tea bags, coffee grounds and filters from the kitchen. With the addition of layers of mulched leaves, dried grass, garden plants, old potting soil and soft plant stems from the garden and with a little maintenance and care, these materials are broken down naturally into compost, which homeowners can use to enrich the soil in their gardens. According to EPA studies, residents can divert approximately 650 pounds of waste per year. This composted material can be used to add nutrients and organic materials to lawns and gardens.
“We are delighted to be able to continue our popular compost bin sale. Composting is a great way to make a rich soil for your gardens while diverting compostable materials from the waste stream,” says Pamela Gratton, manager of the Fairfax County Recycling Program, part of the Division of Solid Waste within the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services.
The backyard compost bin sale will take place rain or shine, and cash
