Make a World of Difference by Donating a Bicycle
Bicycle Collection Drive on May 20

On Friday, May 20, you can make a world of difference by donating a bicycle. The Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services is collecting bicycles for distribution overseas.

Everyday, millions across the globe use bicycles to get to school, transport agricultural products to market or get medical care. Donated bicycles will be given to tsunami victims in Sri Lanka, farmers in Ghana and a micro-enterprise project in Guatemala, among others.

You can donate new or used bicycles from noon to 3 p.m. in parking lot “B” of the Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax. Additionally, a $10 donation is requested to offset shipping costs. This donation and the value of the bicycle are fully tax deductible.

The department is collecting bicycles on behalf of Bikes for the World, an outreach program of the nonprofit Washington Area Bicyclist Association. The group sponsors the annual Bike to Work Day, which is May 20 this year.

For the third year, Fairfax County is participating in Bike to Work Day by hosting the bike collection drive and a “pit stop.” From 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. on May 20, bicycle commuters can ride up to the front entrance of the Government Center for a free breakfast, a bicycle tune up and prizes.

Not only is the bike collection drive a celebration of Bike to Work Day, but also the effort is a celebration of American Public Works Week, May 15 - 20. Because public works is everywhere, the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services is promoting improved transportation here at home and overseas.

For more information about donating a bicycle, please contact Meredith Eisenberg, Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services, 703-324-5313, TTY 711. TO REQUEST SPECIAL ACCOMMODATIONS, CALL 703-324-3187, TTY 703-324-2935. PLEASE ALLOW FIVE WORKING DAYS IN ADVANCE OF EVENTS IN ORDER TO MAKE THE NECESSARY ARRANGEMENTS.
