Fairfax County Hires Coordinator to Unify Prevention Efforts

The Fairfax County Department of Systems Management for Human Services recently hired Denise Raybon for the newly created position of prevention coordinator. In this position, Raybon will monitor and coordinate countywide strategies and processes to strengthen prevention efforts and unify the county’s response to risk prevention.

The new prevention coordinator will work closely with key stakeholders including human services systems staff and leadership, interagency teams and task forces, public and private human services agencies, Fairfax County Public Schools staff, and county residents to draw together the spectrum of prevention programs in the county and offer leadership in the development of a strategic and proactive vision for prevention.

Raybon brings more than a decade of prevention-related experience to this position. Most recently, she served as a senior program manager at the Academy for Educational Development where she provided training and technical assistance to consumers and acted as liaison between state community groups and national decision-makers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

She previously served as the director of education at Northern Virginia AIDS Ministry. Through partnerships with the schools, faith communities, and other community organizations, Raybon and her staff reached more than 26,000 youth each year. She also developed programs for parents and teachers designed to improve communication on HIV and pregnancy-prevention issues.

Prior to her work in public health, Raybon worked for Arlington County as a therapeutic recreation specialist. In this role, she delivered prevention programs and interventions that addressed a multitude of physical, mental, and social challenges among the county’s residents.

Raybon holds a bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a master’s degree in public health from George Washington University.
