Fairfax County and Other Northern Virginia Localities Celebrate International Building Safety Week

International Building Safety Week will be celebrated May 8 - 14 to help the public understand how the building code and code enforcement professionals protect lives and property. In Fairfax County and neighboring jurisdictions, a variety of special events and activities are planned to commemorate the week.

To kick off the week, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will declare May 8 - 14 as International Building Safety Week 2005 during its regularly scheduled Board of Supervisors meeting on May 9. Similar proclamations are expected to be made in Arlington and Prince William counties, the cities of Alexandria and Fairfax and the town of Herndon during their regularly scheduled meetings. The goal of International Building Safety Week is to increase public awareness of the building code and the role of code enforcement professionals.

During the May 9 Board of Supervisors meeting, the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services will also present the Building Safety Community Partnership Award, which recognizes private or corporate residents for advancing the mission of ensuring building safety in Fairfax County. The eighth annual award will be presented to Lynn Green, government affairs manager for the Northern Virginia Building Industry Association, which is headquartered in Chantilly. Green serves on numerous standing committees that form and coordinate policies between Fairfax County and the association.

As a part of International Building Safety Week, county, city and town field inspectors, plan reviewers and administrative staff from six Northern Virginia jurisdictions will jointly participate in a community outreach program. Officials from Fairfax, Arlington and Prince William counties, the cities of Fairfax and Alexandria, and the town of Herndon will be available at selected Home Depot stores on May 14 and 15 to answer building code and safety related questions. Building equipment and safety appliances, such as carbon monoxide alarms, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers and radon test kits, will be displayed. Information brochures on building and elevator safety and permit process information will be available to all customers and visitors.

Participating Home Depot stores are located at 12275 Price Club Plaza, Fairfax; 6201 Arlington Blvd., Fairfax; 3201 Old Lee Highway, Fairfax; 1651 Reston Parkway, Reston; 14025 Foulger Square, Woodbridge; 400 S. Pickett St., Alexandria; and 7710 Richmond Highway, Alexandria.

As part of the town of Herndon’s Neighborhood Inspection Program, brochures about smoke detectors, safe exits and other building safety information will be distributed during International Building Safety Week in the neighborhoods participating in the program. Prince William County’s Department of Fire and Rescue will display a fire truck at the Foulger Square Home Depot in Woodbridge on May 14 and 15. Children and other members of the public will be able to enter the truck for closer examination.
