2005 Braddock District Council Awards Announced
The Braddock District Council of Community Associations and Supervisor Sharon Bulova have announced the winners of the 2005 Best of Braddock, Citizen of the Year and public service awards.
The awards will be presented on Tuesday, July 12, at 7:30 p.m. at the Braddock District office, 9002 Burke Lake Road (Kings Park Library building), Burke. Presentations will take place during the council’s annual picnic.
The awards are a joint program of the council and Supervisor Bulova. Granted for the third consecutive year, the Best of Braddock awards recognize those citizens, organizations and businesses in the Braddock District that have “gone above and beyond to be the very best.” The Citizen of the Year Award has been given since 1992.
The 2005 Best of Braddock award winners are:
Briarwood Court Condo
Association
Category: Commercial Beautification or
Improvement
The association was nominated for excellence and creativity in landscape
improvement. President Judy Wittig will accept the award on behalf of the
association.
Marcel Goldstein
Category: Neighborhood Enhancement or
Beautification
Goldstein was nominated for his advocacy and coordination efforts to
upgrade the facilities at Rutherford Park.
Captain Jack Hurlock and the personnel of
the West Springfield District Police Station Category:
Most “Can-Do” Public Employee
Captain Hurlock and his officers have been nominated for their
leadership, community outreach efforts and innovative approaches to
community policing, which include participation in the Community Dialog
on Gang Prevention, creation of the “Road Dawg” summer camp program, and
the police/community open house at Heritage Mall.
Kings Park West Community Association
Organizing Committee
Category: Club or Organization Really Making a
Difference
The committee was nominated for its work to revitalize the Kings Park
West Homeowners Association, which had been defunct for several years.
President Larry Velte will accept the award on behalf of the committee.
Todd Martin
Category: Most Outstanding Business Person
Martin was nominated for his work as site supervisor of the Reserve at
Martin’s Point, a large development. He works for the Stanley Martin
Companies.
The winner of the 2005 Citizen of the Year Award is Tom Reinkober, president of the Canterbury Woods Civic Association. He is receiving the award for his leadership and efforts to increase appreciation of and education about covenants for community and homeowner associations. Past award winners have included Park Authority Board Member Winnie Shapiro, businessman R. Warren Eisenhower, and Bob Mizer, volunteer liaison and CERT coordinator for the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department.
This year the Braddock District Council is also presenting a Special Award for Public Service. Retired U.S. Postal Service letter carrier Bobby Mills was nominated by many members of the Little Run Civic Association community for his service to the Springbrook Forest area for more than 10 years.
