Student Representative Appointed to the Fairfax County
Environmental Quality Advisory Council
Thomas Jefferson High School Student Chosen

Thomas Jefferson High School senior, Eleni Orphanides, was recently selected to serve on the county’s Environmental Quality Advisory Council. The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors appointed Orphanides, an Alexandria area resident, during its June 20 meeting.

The 14-member advisory body submits to the board its Annual Report on the Environment, which contains recommendations on protecting and improving the county’s environment. During monthly meetings, the council investigates issues such as air and water quality, land use, noise, and solid waste disposal. Resolutions on specific environmental concerns are transmitted to the board during the course of the year.

Orphanides, who began serving her one-year term this month, was selected through a competitive application process. Students from nine different high schools applied to serve on the council this year.

Besides competing on the basis of their grades and extracurricular activities, applicants also submit a 500-word essay on an environmental topic. Orphanides’ essay addressed the loss of wetlands, natural buffer areas and underwater grasses in the Chesapeake Bay.

Appointed by the board, the council is comprised of one citizen representative from each Magisterial District, four at-large members and one student representative. Each member serves a three-year term, except the student representative who serves during his or her junior or senior year of high school.

Applications for the 2006 student representative will be accepted next spring. Fairfax County high school students who have completed their sophomore or junior years are eligible to apply.
