Fairfax County to Remember Sept. 11, 2001
Fairfax County will host its fourth annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Gerald E. Connolly, Fire Chief Michael Neuhard and Police Chief David Rohrer are scheduled to deliver remarks remembering the events of Sept. 11, 2001.
Those interested in attending should gather at 6:45 p.m. in the Forum area of the Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax. The Fairfax County Public Safety Honor Guard, a bagpiper and a bell toller will lead a procession to the 9/11 Memorial Grove Garden located on the grounds of the Government Center.
Following the national anthem and presentation of the colors, Connolly, Neuhard and Rohrer will deliver their remarks. The ceremony will include a candle lighting, the laying of a memorial wreath and a ceremonial tolling of the bells.
The Fairfax Jubil-Aires will perform patriotic music during and after the ceremony, while local Boy Scouts also will attend. Refreshments will be served immediately after the ceremony in the Forum. The Fairfax County 9/11 Memorial Grove Garden, which was unveiled two years ago, was designed by National Park Service landscape architect and Fairfax County Tree Commissioner Michael McMahon.
The rain site for the ceremony is the Forum of the Government Center.
