Third Northern Virginia Regional Team Deploys to New Orleans
Team of 10 brings Northern Virginia
contingent to at least 24
Another 10 members of the Northern Virginia regional team responding to Hurricane Katrina will depart today for New Orleans. This brings to 24 the number of senior managers from five jurisdictions who have deployed.
The team draws expertise from the City of Alexandria and from Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William counties. This week’s deployments mark the first time a high-level, city-management team of senior officials from the National Capital Region has responded to the needs of another region.
Team members include a county chief information officer, a mental health director, a comptroller, a senior public works official and a regional coordinator from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management. By jurisdiction, they are:
-
Arlington County
Jack Belcher, chief information officer
Barbara Liechti, county comptroller -
Fairfax County
Suzanne Devlin, deputy police chief
Ray Pylant, building official, Department of Public Works and Environmental Services -
Loudoun County
Kevin Johnson, emergency management coordinator
Don McGarry, emergency management specialist, Public Works
Roger Biraben, division director, Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse -
Prince William County
John Meehan, environmental health manager
Rob Clemons, captain, Fire Department -
Virginia Department of Emergency Management
Cindy Causey, Region VII coordinator
The Northern Virginia team will replace emergency managers from North Carolina, who have returned home to respond to Hurricane Ophelia. Other officials from the five jurisdictions are on standby and will be deployed if requested.
Northern Virginia’s regional Incident Support Team was activated on Sept. 4 to begin planning a joint response to the region affected by Katrina and to respond to requests for assistance. It will remain staffed for as long as the regional team is deployed. These teams are responding to a request from the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (10-Person Team Deployed on Tuesday, Sept. 13; Additional Members Join Northern Virginia Regional Response.)
Be Ready. Make a Plan
September is National Preparedness Month, and hurricane season extends
through Nov. 30. Northern Virginia jurisdictions are reminding the public
to “Be Ready. Make a Plan” – the mantra of a region-wide disaster
preparedness campaign. For more information, please visit www.makeaplan.org.
