Northern Virginia Regional Team Members Return Tonight
The initial team from five Northern Virginia jurisdictions deployed to New Orleans Sept. 13-15, is expected to return home today. The team, who responded to a request from the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, is part of the Northern Virginia region’s continued coordinated response to the area ravaged by Hurricane Katrina.
Drawing from all levels of government, the team has been assisting city officials in New Orleans in staffing their emergency operations center, which was established in the Hyatt Regency Hotel located near the Superdome. The team has been assisting with a variety of emergency management functions, including command and control, planning, logistics, finance and operations.
A 19-member team, representing Northern Virginia jurisdictions, was deployed on Monday, Sept. 26, to replace the initial team led by Prince William County Executive Craig Gerhart. The replacement team, led by Fairfax County Deputy County Executive Rob Stalzer, is composed of staff from Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William counties and the City of Alexandria. This team has been working with the initial team to transition into the emergency operations center.
