Members of Second Northern Virginia Regional Team Assisting in New Orleans to Return on Oct. 11

The second team representing five Northern Virginia jurisdictions deployed to New Orleans is expected to return home at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 11. The team, which responded to a request from the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, is part of the Northern Virginia region’s continued coordinated response to the area ravaged by Hurricane Katrina.

Drawing from all levels of government, the team has been assisting city officials in New Orleans in staffing their emergency operations center, which was established in the Hyatt Regency Hotel located near the Superdome. The team has been helping with a variety of emergency management functions, including command and control, planning, logistics, finance, operations and public information.

The 19-member team, led by Fairfax County Deputy County Executive Rob Stalzer, was deployed to New Orleans on Sept. 26 and is composed of staff from Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William counties, the City of Alexandria and the Virginia Department of Transportation.

“We’ve definitely made a difference,” said Stalzer. “The team has been incredible and I am so proud of each of these individuals for what they have done here in New Orleans. Residents from each of the Northern Virginia jurisdictions should also feel good about the contributions this team has made in improving the lives of those affected by Hurricane Katrina.”

Note to Media: The Northern Virginia Regional team is scheduled to arrive at 12:33 a.m. at Dulles International Airport on American Airlines Flight 446.
