Fairfax County to Celebrate GIS Day on Nov. 16

On Wednesday, Nov. 16, Fairfax County government agencies will showcase their achievements and educate their peers and the public about how they use Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Activities will include the announcement of the annual GIS Day Excellence Awards; GIS exhibitors from numerous county agencies providing live demonstrations of GIS products, services and “internal” business processes; the GIS Excellence Awards Map Gallery; and drawings for GIS Day T-shirts and hats throughout the day. GIS Day is a global event during which GIS users work to expand the understanding of how GIS technology and geography makes a difference in our lives. All GIS Day activities will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax.

GIS, a computer-based tool used to map and analyze features and events, combines the power of a database with the visualization capabilities offered by maps. More than half a million people in the world use GIS to solve problems in areas such as environmental protection, pollution, health care, land use, asset deployment and routing, natural resources, conservation, business efficiency, education and social inequities. Over the past year, GIS was an essential tool in responding to the tsunami in Asia and to Hurricane Katrina.

The GIS Excellence Awards recognize individual county employees, teams and departments that have demonstrated exceptional utilization of GIS. The awards will be announced by Braddock District Supervisor Sharon Bulova, and Wanda Gibson, chief technology officer and director of the Department of Information Technology. Winners have used GIS to improve business processes, perform geographic analysis, visualize projects and improve efficiency.

The GIS Exhibit Hall will include agency employees representing Fire and Rescue, Health, Housing and Community Development, Park Authority, Planning and Zoning, Police, Public Schools, Systems Management for Human Services, Transportation, Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District, as well as Public Works and Environmental Services. Guests will be able to see how these agencies are using GIS to deliver enhanced services and discuss those uses with each agency’s representatives.
