Fairfax County Government Channel 16 Provides Captioning
Fairfax County Government Channel 16, which has been captioning Board of Supervisors meetings since 1996, now captions all pre-recorded programs. This includes board members’ monthly programs and town meetings, and the award-winning documentaries and information programming found on Channel 16.
Channel 16 delivers more than 850 hours of programming per year, including Board of Supervisors meetings. Award-winning shows such as “County Magazine,” “Your Community, Your Call” and “Information Avenue” offer useful information for county residents.
“Fairfax County took a leadership role in government television when we worked with the hearing-impaired community to begin using sign language interpreters in 1992,” said Gail Condrick, director of the Department of Cable Communications and Consumer Protection. “We started with covering our Board of Supervisors meetings and added captioning when the technology allowed four years later. The natural next step in this process of matching technology and community needs is to caption our programs so that they can be enjoyed by all of our residents. That is where we are today.”
Channel 16 was recently named the best government access cable television station in the country by the Alliance for Community Media’s Hometown Video Festival, receiving the Overall Excellence in Government Access Award for the wide scope of quality programming, including coverage of government meetings, public affairs programming, public service announcements and government services. Channel 16 also won the award in 1996 and 1999.
Channel 16 is available in Fairfax County on the Cox Communications cable system and in Reston on the Comcast Cable system. Fairfax County Government Channel 16 is also available on the Internet at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/cable/channel16/vod.htm.
