Fifth Fairfax County Youth Leadership Class Graduates

Sixth Class Begins in February

An innovative program launched by Fairfax County is preparing the next generation of citizens to become engaged leaders in the community. The Youth Leadership Program, now beginning its sixth year, takes high school juniors from the classroom into county offices and work sites to experience first-hand the work of their local government, the one that is “closest to the people” and the first responder in times of crises.

On Jan. 25, 39 students graduated from the program. Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Gerald E. Connolly, County Executive Anthony H. Griffin and Fairfax County Public School Superintendent Dr. Jack Dale presented graduates with certificates of achievement during a ceremony at the Government Center.

These future leaders represented the fifth class to complete the year-long program. Established by the county’s Department of Management and Budget, participants learn about public policy issues through seminars and a three-week internship with a county agency. Once a month, students attend three-hour classes conducted by different county agencies. Students explore topics such as homelessness, education, human services, budgeting, recreation and culture, public safety, and land use planning and development.

The program accepts high school juniors throughout the county, and applicants are chosen on the basis of their academic achievement and community involvement.

The class of 2005 includes the following students: Elizabeth Do and Elizabeth Eckert, Annandale High School; Stephanie Shin and Brandon Stoy, Centreville High School; Gurdeep Bal, Chantilly High School; Joseph Levy and Lynn Huang, Fairfax High School; Amanda Yannopoulos, Falls Church High School; Brendan Gilmartin, Hayfield Secondary; Amanda Karim, Herndon High School; Jennifer Garrott and Haige Zhou, Lake Braddock Secondary; Katherine Miller and Julia Lanzara, Langley High School; Stephen Surbey, Madison High School; Svetlana Macarov and Larissa Flores, Marshall High School; Iman Fahimi, Joanna Berg and Brendan McCook, McLean High School; Omar Shairzay, Mount Vernon High School; Katie Schelhorn and Eliot Toy, Oakton High School; Lindsey Gera, Robert E.
