Providence District Supervisor to Host Two Tax Relief Workshops for Seniors
Looking for tax relief? Providence District senior citizens are invited to two workshops on applying for real estate tax relief. Hosted by Providence District Supervisor Linda Q. Smyth, the workshops will be held on March 15 and April 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at her district office, 8739 Lee Highway, Fairfax.
Personnel from the county’s Department of Tax Administration will be present on both dates to help eligible seniors apply for tax relief.
Last year, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved an expansion of the Real Estate Tax Relief Program for the Elderly and Disabled. The change to this ordinance increases the net combined financial asset eligibility requirement from $240,000 to the state maximum of $340,000 for those who meet the age, disability and income requirements. The income limit also has been increased from $52,000 to the fixed state maximum of $72,000. This change is retroactive to all of tax year 2005.
The board also extended the deadline to apply for 2005 tax relief until Dec. 31, 2006, for first-time filers and cases of hardship. Existing applicants who have already been certified for some level of real estate tax relief for 2005 do not need to reapply.
Seniors looking for more information about real estate tax relief can call the Department of Tax Administration at 703-222-8234, TTY 703-222-7594, between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekdays. More information is also available online at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dta/tax_relief.htm.
