Teen Driving Forum to Be Held March 4
“The Road Ahead,” a forum for teen drivers and the adults who care about them, will be held on Saturday, March 4, from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. (registration opens at 8:15 a.m.) in the Fairfax County Government Center Board Auditorium, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax. The forum is sponsored by the Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court Citizens Advisory Council.
The Teen Driving Forum is part of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors’ Safe Teen Driving Initiative launched last year to establish better driving instruction, increased enforcement and greater parental involvement. The forum follows up on the Young Drivers Summit held in June. It will feature some of the latest advances in teen driving safety to help prevent Fairfax County’s teen drivers from becoming statistics. Last year, 10 of the 62 fatalities on Fairfax County roads were under age 21.
Board of Supervisors Chairman Gerald E. Connolly will address the participants. Presenters will include Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court Judges Gayl Carr and Thomas Mann and representatives from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. According to a recently released study from the foundation, Virginia is one of the leading states in traffic fatalities caused by teen drivers. The study found that crashes involving 15- to 17-year-olds claimed the lives of close to 31,000 people nationwide between 1995 and 2004 — 675 of those in Virginia.
The Teen Driving Forum will include sessions on:
• Interactive software that puts teens in a virtual driver’s seat.
• Driver training resources.
• Driving contracts that work.
• Rules of the road — a judge’s view.
