Leadership in the Sports Arena

leadership as a coach. Arena, acknowledged as the foremost American
soccer coach in the history of the sport, led the University of Virginia
to five NCAA titles and D.C. United in two professional championships. He
was selected to coach the United States soccer team for the World Cup
competition in Germany.
MS Awareness Week
The Board of Supervisors will designate March 12-17, 2006, as MS
Awareness Week in Fairfax County. Multiple sclerosis is a chronic and
often disabling disease of the central nervous system that affects
approximately 10,000 individuals in Virginia and 400,000 people
nationwide. Researchers continue to search for a cure while contributing
to the development of improved treatment options that enhance the quality
of life for people with MS.
Growing Once, Growing Twice …
The Board of Supervisors will designate March 25, 2006, as Master
Gardener Day in Fairfax County. The first class of Fairfax County master
gardeners graduated on March 25, 1976, by completing 90 hours of training
and 72 hours of community service. Since 1976, the Fairfax County Master
Gardener Association, in cooperation with the Virginia Cooperative
Extension, has provided unbiased, research-based horticulture information
to the residents in the county. In 2005, more than 200 Master Gardener
volunteers made 33,000 contacts with county residents to resolve
gardening needs.
March 24 Is Tuberculosis Awareness Day
The Board of Supervisors will issue a proclamation to designate March
24, 2006, as Tuberculosis Awareness Day in Fairfax County. One-third of
the world’s population is infected with tuberculosis. Each year 9 million
individuals develop tuberculosis and 2 million die from the disease. More
than 14,000 people in the United States develop tuberculosis each year.
Making the Dollars Count
The Board of Supervisors will designate March 2006 as Purchasing Month
in Fairfax County. Public procurement and materials management
professionals support governmental services by promoting ethical
purchasing practices. Throughout Fairfax County schools and government,
these professionals are dedicated to pursuing efficiency in the operation
of government and providing the highest value for each dollar spent.
