Fairfax County Board of Supervisors to Receive Award From Washington Area Bicyclist Association
Gerald E. Connolly Will Deliver Keynote Address
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will receive an award on Thursday, April 6, from the Washington Area Bicyclist Association for focusing attention on the need to improve facilities and procedures for bicycle transportation in the county through a proposed Comprehensive Bicycle Initiative. Chairman Gerald E. Connolly will accept the award, which will be presented at the Bicyclist Association’s annual meeting, on behalf of the Board of Supervisors for laying the groundwork for a comprehensive bicycle program. Connolly also will deliver the keynote address.
“Fairfax County’s Comprehensive Bicycle Initiative recognizes that bicycling is a viable transportation option. By creating real choices, such as through improved bicycle facilities, we strengthen the county’s whole transportation network,” said Connolly.
The Comprehensive Bicycle Initiative is under consideration for funding by the Board of Supervisors as part of the county’s FY 2007 budget deliberations. The Board of Supervisors will adopt the budget at its May 1 meeting. The program would include a full-time bicycle program coordinator, creating a countywide bicycle map, and establishing a pilot program in a specific area of the county for an interconnected bicycling network.
The Washington Area Bicyclist Association meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at the Lyon Village Community House, 1920 N. Highland Street, Arlington. Connolly is expected to speak at approximately 6:30 p.m.
