Celebrate Bike to Work Day on May 19
Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Issues Proclamation
Pedal power will be the commute of choice for many Fairfax County residents celebrating Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 19. The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors issued a proclamation at its meeting today designating May 19 as Bike to Work Day in the county and encouraging residents to participate as an effective means to improve air quality, reduce traffic congestion and conserve energy.
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors recently received an award from the Washington Area Bicyclist Association for focusing attention on the need to improve facilities and procedures for bicycle transportation in the county. Funding for a Comprehensive Bicycle Initiative was approved as part of the FY 2007 budget. The program would include a full-time bicycle program coordinator, creating a countywide bicycle map, and establishing a pilot program in a specific area of the county for an interconnected bicycling network.
Bike to Work Day is organized by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association. There will be several pit stops for rest and refreshments at Fairfax County locations:
